Here’s a straightforward guide for making breadsticks—soft, fluffy, and perfect as a snack or alongside pasta 🍞🧂

Classic Breadsticks

Ingredients (makes about 12 breadsticks)

  • 2¼ tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water (110°F / 43°C)
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 2½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp olive oil

Optional toppings:

  • Melted butter
  • Garlic powder
  • Grated Parmesan cheese
  • Dried herbs (oregano, thyme, rosemary)

Instructions

1. Activate yeast

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast.
  2. Let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.

2. Make dough

  1. In a large bowl, mix flour and salt.
  2. Add yeast mixture and olive oil.
  3. Mix until a soft dough forms.

3. Knead dough

  • Knead on a floured surface 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic.

4. First rise

  • Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise 1 hour until doubled in size.

5. Shape breadsticks

  1. Punch down dough and divide into 12 pieces.
  2. Roll each piece into a 6–8 inch stick.
  3. Place on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet.

6. Second rise

  • Cover and let rise 20–30 minutes.

7. Bake

  • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • Bake 12–15 minutes until golden brown.

8. Add toppings

  • Brush with melted butter, sprinkle garlic, herbs, or Parmesan.

Tips

  • For crispier breadsticks, brush with butter after baking and broil 1–2 minutes.
  • Flavor variations: Add rosemary, sesame seeds, or poppy seeds before baking.
  • Can be frozen before second rise and baked later.
