Bánh nhãn

Posted on March 18, 2026 by Admin

Bánh nhãn is a traditional Vietnamese dessert/snack that comes from the Hai Hậu District of Nam Định Province in northern Vietnam. It’s sometimes translated as “longan‑shaped cake” because its small round golden shape and color resemble the fruit longan, even though it doesn’t contain the fruit itself. (vietnam.vn)

🍬 What It Is

  • Made mainly from glutinous rice flour, eggs, sugar, and often a bit of fat
  • Fried or baked into small round, crispy outside and tender inside cakes
  • Sweet and fragrant, often enjoyed as a snack or dessert (vietnam.vn)

The name bánh nhãn literally means “longan cake” because of its appearance, not its flavor or ingredients. (vietnam.vn)

🥮 Taste & Texture

  • Crispy exterior from frying or baking
  • Soft and slightly chewy interior
  • Sweet from the sugar and rich from rice flour and egg (vietnam.vn)

🥄 Where It’s Enjoyed

This snack is considered a local specialty in parts of northern Vietnam and often found in markets or sold during festive occasions. (vietnam.vn)

Would you like a simple recipe for making bánh nhãn at home? (I can give you one based on traditional ingredients.)
