Homemade peppermint patties

Posted on December 17, 2025 by Admin

Making homemade peppermint patties is actually pretty fun, and the result is rich, creamy, and fresh—way better than most store-bought versions. Here’s a reliable method with tips for success:

Ingredients

For the filling:

  • 2 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 2–3 tablespoons light corn syrup (or honey as a substitute)
  • 1–2 teaspoons peppermint extract (start with 1 tsp, taste, add more if needed)
  • 1–2 tablespoons milk (as needed for texture)

For the chocolate coating:

  • 8 oz semi-sweet or dark chocolate, chopped (or chocolate chips)
  • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil or shortening (optional, for smoother coating)

Instructions

1. Make the Peppermint Filling

  1. In a medium bowl, mix the powdered sugar, butter, and corn syrup.
  2. Add peppermint extract.
  3. Gradually add milk (start with 1 tbsp) until the mixture forms a firm but pliable dough that you can roll.
  4. Roll the dough into a log about 1 inch in diameter, or shape into small disks, balls, or rectangles.
  5. Place on a parchment-lined tray and chill in the fridge for 30–60 minutes to firm up.

2. Prepare the Chocolate

  1. Melt the chocolate in a double boiler or in the microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring until smooth.
  2. Stir in vegetable oil if you want a shinier, smoother coating.

3. Dip the Peppermint Patties

  1. Remove the chilled peppermint pieces from the fridge.
  2. Using a fork or toothpick, dip each piece into the melted chocolate, letting excess drip off.
  3. Place on parchment paper to set.
  4. Chill briefly to harden the chocolate (about 15–20 minutes in the fridge).

Tips

  • Consistency is key: The filling should be firm but not crumbly. If too dry, add a tiny bit more milk or corn syrup.
  • Flavor boost: Some people add a drop of green food coloring for that classic peppermint look.
  • Storage: Keep in an airtight container at room temperature or in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

If you want, I can also give a shortcut method that doesn’t require rolling or dipping individually—great if you want a big batch fast. Do you want me to show that version too?
