🍞 Old-Fashioned Homemade Bread
Ingredients
-
1 cup warm water (about 110°F / 43°C)
-
2¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
-
2 tbsp sugar or honey
-
2 tbsp melted butter or oil
-
1½ tsp salt
-
3 cups all-purpose flour (plus more as needed)
🔪 Instructions
-
Activate the yeast:
In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast.
Let it sit for 5–10 minutes, until foamy on top. -
Mix the dough:
Add melted butter (or oil) and salt, then gradually stir in the flour, 1 cup at a time, until a soft dough forms. -
Knead:
Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 8–10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
(If using a stand mixer, use the dough hook on medium speed for about 6 minutes.) -
First rise:
Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1½ hours, or until doubled in size. -
Shape the loaf:
Punch down the dough to release air, then shape it into a loaf.
Place in a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan. -
Second rise:
Cover and let rise again for 30–45 minutes, until the dough rises about 1 inch above the pan’s edge. -
Bake:
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped. -
Cool:
Remove from pan and cool on a wire rack before slicing.
