Old-fashioned custard pie

Posted on October 27, 2025 by Admin
Here’s a classic, old-fashioned custard pie recipe — creamy, comforting, and simple, just like the ones Grandma used to make. 🥧

🥧 Old-Fashioned Custard Pie Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust (homemade or store-bought)

  • 3 large eggs

  • ¾ cup granulated sugar

  • ¼ teaspoon salt

  • 2 cups whole milk (or half-and-half for a richer custard)

  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

  • Ground nutmeg (for topping)

🔪 Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven:
    Set to 400°F (200°C).

  2. Prepare the crust:
Place your unbaked pie crust into a 9-inch pie pan. Crimp or flute the edges if you’d like.

  3. Mix the custard:
In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar, salt, milk, and vanilla until smooth and well blended (don’t overbeat—just mix until combined).

  4. Assemble the pie:
Pour the custard mixture into the unbaked crust.
Lightly sprinkle ground nutmeg on top.

  5. Bake:

    • Bake at 400°F for 10 minutes.

    • Then reduce heat to 325°F (160°C) and continue baking for 30–35 minutes, or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean.

  6. Cool:
Remove from oven and let cool completely on a wire rack.
The custard will continue to set as it cools.

  7. Chill (optional):
For a firmer texture, refrigerate for a few hours before serving.

🍽️ Serving Tips

  • Delicious served plain, or with a little whipped cream or a dash of cinnamon.

  • Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
