Amish comfort in a bowl soup

Posted on December 14, 2025 by Admin

Here’s a hearty Amish Comfort in a Bowl Soup recipe—warm, filling, and perfect for cozy dinners. Amish soups are usually simple, wholesome, and packed with vegetables, meat, and noodles or dumplings.

Ingredients (serves 6–8)

  • 1 lb boneless chicken thighs or breast, cut into bite-size pieces
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 2 cups water
  • 3 medium potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 3 carrots, sliced
  • 2 celery stalks, sliced
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup egg noodles or small pasta
  • 1 tsp salt (adjust to taste)
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp dried thyme or poultry seasoning
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour (for thickening, optional)
  • Fresh parsley, chopped for garnish

Instructions

1. Cook the Chicken & Vegetables

  1. In a large pot, heat butter over medium heat. Add onions and garlic; sauté until soft.
  2. Add chicken pieces and cook until lightly browned.

2. Add Broth & Seasonings

  1. Pour in chicken broth and water.
  2. Add potatoes, carrots, celery, thyme, salt, and pepper.
  3. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer 20–25 minutes, until vegetables are tender and chicken is cooked through.

3. Thicken & Add Noodles

  1. Optional: In a small bowl, mix flour with a little water to make a slurry; stir into soup to thicken slightly.
  2. Add egg noodles and simmer another 8–10 minutes until tender.

4. Serve

  • Ladle soup into bowls and garnish with chopped parsley.
  • Serve with warm bread or biscuits for a complete comfort meal.

Tips & Variations

  • Vegetable twist: Add corn, green beans, or peas for extra color and flavor.
  • Richer flavor: Use homemade chicken stock instead of store-bought broth.
  • Dumpling option: Drop simple biscuit dough or Amish-style dumplings on top during the last 10 minutes of cooking for a heartier bowl.

If you want, I can also give a creamy, ultra-comfort version that’s extra thick and hearty, perfect for chilly nights—it’s like Amish chicken pot pie in a bowl. Do you want me to do that?
