Boiled egg

Posted on October 26, 2025March 1, 2026 by Admin

Boiling an egg sounds simple, but getting it just right — soft, medium, or hard — requires timing and a little technique. Here’s a clear guide:

🥚 How to Boil an Egg Perfectly

You’ll need:

  • Eggs (as fresh as possible, but slightly older eggs peel easier)

  • Water

  • Salt (optional)

  • Vinegar (optional, helps prevent cracking)

Steps

  1. Prep the eggs:

    • Take eggs out of the fridge and let them sit at room temperature for 5–10 minutes (optional, reduces cracking).

  2. Boil water:

    • Fill a saucepan with enough water to cover the eggs by 1 inch.

    • Add a pinch of salt or 1 tsp vinegar if desired.

    • Bring to a rolling boil.

  3. Add the eggs:

    • Lower eggs gently into boiling water using a spoon.

    • Reduce heat slightly to maintain a gentle boil (not a rolling violent boil, which can crack eggs).

  4. Timing:

    • Soft-boiled (runny yolk): 4–6 minutes

    • Medium (slightly creamy yolk): 7–9 minutes

    • Hard-boiled (fully set yolk): 10–12 minutes

  5. Cool quickly:

    • Immediately transfer eggs to an ice water bath or run under cold water for 5 minutes.

    • This stops cooking and makes peeling easier.

  6. Peel and enjoy:

    • Tap eggs gently on a hard surface, roll to crack the shell, and peel.

    • Older eggs peel more easily than super-fresh eggs.

💡 Tips

  • To avoid a green ring around the yolk in hard-boiled eggs: don’t overcook and cool quickly.

  • For perfectly centered yolks in soft-boiled eggs: stir gently for the first minute after adding eggs to boiling water.

If you want, I can also give you a “chef’s trick” method to make jammy eggs with soft, custardy yolks every time. Do you want me to?
