Beef and mashed potatoes

Posted on December 6, 2025 by Admin

Here’s a classic Beef and Mashed Potatoes meal — comforting, hearty, and easy to make at home. You can make it as a gravy-topped dinner or a skillet-style one-pan meal.

🥩 Beef and Mashed Potatoes

Ingredients (2–3 servings)

For the beef

  • 1 lb (450g) beef (chuck roast, sirloin, or ground beef for quicker version)
  • 1–2 tbsp olive oil or butter
  • Salt & black pepper
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 2–3 garlic cloves, minced
  • Optional: ½ cup beef stock or red wine

For mashed potatoes

  • 4–5 medium potatoes (Yukon Gold or Russet)
  • 3–4 tbsp butter
  • ¼–½ cup milk or cream (adjust for desired creaminess)
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • Optional: garlic, chives, or cheese

Instructions

1. Make the mashed potatoes

  1. Peel and cut potatoes into even chunks.
  2. Boil in salted water until tender (~15–20 min).
  3. Drain and mash with butter and milk until creamy.
  4. Season with salt, pepper, and optional herbs or garlic.

2. Cook the beef

Option A: Pan-seared steak or roast slices

  1. Season beef with salt and pepper.
  2. Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.
  3. Sear beef on all sides until desired doneness (rare, medium, well).
  4. Remove and let rest a few minutes.

Option B: Beef stew-style (slow-cooked)

  1. Cut beef into cubes.
  2. Brown in a pan with oil. Remove and set aside.
  3. Sauté onions and garlic.
  4. Add beef back and pour in stock or wine. Simmer 45–60 min until tender.

3. Make gravy (optional)

  • Use pan drippings, add a splash of stock and 1–2 tsp flour.
  • Whisk and cook until thickened. Pour over beef and mashed potatoes.

4. Serve

  • Plate a generous scoop of mashed potatoes, top with beef and gravy.
  • Garnish with fresh herbs if desired.

⭐ Tips

  • For creamier mashed potatoes: warm your milk/cream before mashing.
  • Make ahead: Mashed potatoes can be kept warm in a covered dish; beef can be sliced and reheated gently.
  • Add vegetables: peas, carrots, or green beans make it a full meal.
  • One-pan shortcut: cook beef, remove, make mashed potatoes in same pot with stock and butter for flavor.

If you want, I can also give a sheet pan version where the beef and mashed potatoes cook together, or a classic shepherd’s pie twist with a mashed potato topping.
