Fried Cabbage with Bacon, Onion, and Garlic Recipe

Posted on November 11, 2025 by Admin

Absolutely! Fried Cabbage with Bacon, Onion, and Garlic is a classic Southern-style side dish — savory, slightly sweet, and full of flavor. 🥓🧄🥬

🥓 Fried Cabbage with Bacon, Onion, and Garlic

🧺 Ingredients (Serves 4)

  • 1 medium head of cabbage, cored and thinly sliced
  • 4–5 slices bacon, chopped
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • Optional: ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes for a little heat
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar or lemon juice for brightness

🔪 Instructions

1. Cook the bacon

  • Heat a large skillet or sauté pan over medium heat.
  • Add chopped bacon and cook until crispy, about 5–7 minutes.
  • Remove bacon with a slotted spoon, leaving bacon fat in the pan.

2. Sauté onion and garlic

  • Add sliced onion to the bacon fat and sauté 3–4 minutes, until soft and translucent.
  • Stir in garlic and cook 30 seconds to 1 minute, until fragrant.

3. Cook the cabbage

  • Add sliced cabbage to the pan, stirring to coat with bacon fat.
  • Season with salt, black pepper, and optional red pepper flakes.
  • Cover the pan and cook 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until cabbage is tender but still slightly crisp.

4. Combine and finish

  • Stir in cooked bacon.
  • If desired, drizzle with apple cider vinegar or squeeze lemon juice for a subtle tang.
  • Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.

🌟 Tips & Variations

  • Extra flavor: Add a splash of soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce.
  • Smoky touch: Use smoked bacon or add a pinch of smoked paprika.
  • Vegetable mix: Stir in sliced carrots or bell peppers for color.
  • Make it spicy: Add chopped jalapeños with the onions.

This dish pairs perfectly with fried chicken, pork chops, or any Southern-style meal.

If you like, I can also give you an oven-baked version where the cabbage and bacon caramelize together for an even deeper flavor. Do you want me to do that?
