🥬 German Cabbage and Dumplings (Kohl und Klöße)

📝 Ingredients:

For the cabbage:

  • 1 medium green cabbage, shredded
  • 2 tbsp butter or oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2–3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp caraway seeds (optional, traditional flavor)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • ½ cup vegetable or chicken broth

For the dumplings (Klöße):

  • 2 cups potatoes (boiled and mashed)
  • ½ cup flour
  • 1 egg
  • Salt (to taste)
  • Optional: a small piece of bread or breadcrumbs for texture

🍳 Instructions:

1. Prepare the cabbage:

  1. Heat butter or oil in a large skillet.
  2. Sauté onions until soft, then add garlic and cook 30 seconds.
  3. Add shredded cabbage and caraway seeds.
  4. Pour in broth, season with salt and pepper, cover, and simmer 15–20 minutes until tender.

2. Prepare the dumplings:

  1. Combine mashed potatoes, flour, egg, and salt to form a dough.
  2. Shape into small balls or ovals.
  3. Boil in salted water for 8–10 minutes until they float to the surface.
  4. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain.

3. Serve:

  • Place dumplings on a plate and top with sautéed cabbage.
