Fried halloumi cheese

Posted on November 6, 2025 by Admin

Fried Halloumi Cheese is one of the easiest and most delicious ways to enjoy this salty, chewy cheese. When fried, Halloumi gets a crispy golden crust while staying soft and slightly gooey inside. Here’s a simple recipe to get it just right. 🧀🍽️

🧑‍🍳 Ingredients (Serves 2–4)

  • 8 oz (225 g) Halloumi cheese, sliced into ¼-inch (0.5 cm) thick slices
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (or enough to coat the pan)
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano (optional, for flavor)
  • Fresh lemon wedges (for serving)
  • Fresh herbs (such as parsley or mint) for garnish (optional)
  • A drizzle of honey or balsamic glaze (optional, for sweetness)

🥄 Instructions

  1. Prepare the Halloumi:
    • Slice the Halloumi into thick slices, about ¼-inch thick.
    • You can also cut it into sticks or cubes if you prefer smaller bites.
  2. Heat the pan:
    • Heat a non-stick or cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat.
    • Add the olive oil and let it heat up. You’ll want enough oil to coat the bottom of the pan but not completely submerge the cheese.
  3. Fry the Halloumi:
    • Once the pan is hot, place the Halloumi slices in the pan in a single layer.
    • Fry for 2–3 minutes on each side, or until golden and crispy. Don’t move the cheese around too much; let it form a nice crust before flipping.
  4. Add flavor:
    • While frying, sprinkle the Halloumi with dried oregano (optional) or your favorite herbs. This gives a nice herby flavor that complements the cheese.
  5. Serve:
    • Once the Halloumi is golden and crispy on both sides, remove it from the pan.
    • Serve immediately with fresh lemon wedges for squeezing, or drizzle with honey or balsamic glaze for a sweet-salty contrast. You can also garnish with chopped fresh herbs like parsley or mint.

💡 Tips:

  • No need to salt: Halloumi is naturally salty, so there’s no need to add extra salt. If you like a bit of heat, you can sprinkle some chili flakes over the fried cheese.
  • Pan-frying only: Halloumi holds up well to frying, but it doesn’t melt like other cheeses, so it’s perfect for this method. Avoid using high heat when first adding it to the pan to avoid burning the outside before the inside crisps up.
  • Serving ideas:
    • Serve fried Halloumi as an appetizer with pita, olives, and tzatziki.
    • It’s also great in a salad, paired with tomatoes, cucumber, and a simple vinaigrette.
    • You can also make a simple Halloumi wrap with some fresh veggies and a drizzle of dressing.

This fried Halloumi is crispy, golden, and packed with flavor. It’s such a fun way to enjoy cheese! Would you like any sides or dips to go with it?
