Blackberry dumplings

Posted on November 6, 2025 by Admin

Blackberry Dumplings are a delightful, comforting dessert perfect for late summer when blackberries are in season. The sweet, tart blackberries burst with flavor, and the dumplings are soft and biscuit-like, soaking up the juices as they cook. The result is a cozy, slightly sweet dish that’s perfect with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream!

Here’s an easy, delicious recipe for Blackberry Dumplings:

🍇 Blackberry Dumplings

Ingredients (serves 6)

For the Blackberry Filling:

  • 4 cups fresh blackberries (or frozen, thawed and drained)
  • ¾ cup sugar (adjust based on the sweetness of your berries)
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

For the Dumplings:

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 6 tbsp unsalted butter, cold and cut into small cubes
  • ¾ cup whole milk (or buttermilk for a richer taste)

Instructions

1. Prepare the blackberry filling:

  • In a large saucepan, combine the blackberries, sugar, cornstarch, lemon juice, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt.
  • Stir gently to coat the berries in the sugar and cornstarch mixture.
  • Place the pan over medium heat and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 5–7 minutes, or until the mixture thickens and the blackberries start to release their juices.
  • Once the filling is thickened, remove from heat and set aside.

2. Make the dumplings:

  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  • Cut the cold butter into the flour mixture using a pastry cutter, two forks, or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Pour in the milk and stir until just combined into a sticky dough (don’t overmix).

3. Assemble the dumplings:

  • Bring the blackberry filling to a simmer over low heat.
  • Using a spoon, drop spoonfuls of the dumpling dough over the simmering berry mixture, covering most of the surface.
  • Cover the pan with a lid, reduce the heat to low, and let the dumplings cook for about 20–25 minutes, or until the dumplings are cooked through and puffed up. Don’t lift the lid during cooking, as the steam helps cook the dumplings.

4. Serve:

  • Once the dumplings are cooked, carefully remove the lid and check to ensure the dumplings are fluffy and fully cooked in the center (you can insert a toothpick to check for doneness).
  • Spoon the blackberry filling and dumplings into bowls.
  • Serve warm, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for extra indulgence.

Tips and Variations

  • Frozen Blackberries: If using frozen blackberries, don’t thaw them. Just add them directly to the filling mixture, and you may need to cook a little longer to thicken.
  • Spices: Add a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg to the blackberry filling for extra flavor.
  • Biscuits instead of dumplings: If you prefer a fluffier texture, you can use your favorite biscuits or scone dough instead of the dumplings for a slightly different spin.
  • Topping: If you like a bit of crunch, sprinkle some demerara sugar over the dumplings before covering them to add a crunchy top.

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve these warm dumplings with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream or some whipped cream on top.
  • For an extra burst of flavor, drizzle the dish with a bit of caramel sauce or sprinkle with some toasted almonds.

This is a simple, comforting dessert that showcases the wonderful sweetness of blackberries and the soft, fluffy texture of the dumplings. It’s perfect for any occasion, and especially great when you have a lot of fresh fruit to use up!

Let me know if you’d like any other fruit variation or dessert suggestions! 😊
