Philly Cheesesteak Casserole combines all the flavors of a classic Philly cheesesteak sandwich in a hearty, comforting casserole. This dish is packed with seasoned beef, peppers, onions, and plenty of gooey cheese, making it a satisfying meal that’s perfect for any night of the week.

Philly Cheesesteak Casserole Recipe

Ingredients (for 6 servings):

  • For the casserole:
    • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef or steak (thinly sliced or chopped into small pieces, like sirloin or ribeye)
    • 1 medium onion, chopped
    • 1 large bell pepper, chopped (green or red)
    • 2 tbsp olive oil
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • 2 cups frozen or fresh mushrooms, sliced (optional)
    • 1 tsp salt
    • 1 tsp black pepper
    • 1 tsp paprika (optional)
    • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
    • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • For the sauce and cheese:
    • 1 cup cream cheese (softened)
    • ½ cup sour cream
    • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
    • 1 cup shredded provolone cheese (or more if you like it cheesy!)
    • ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • For the topping:
    • 1 cup crispy French fried onions (optional, for extra crunch)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven: 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish or casserole dish with cooking spray.
  2. Cook the beef and veggies:
    • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef (or steak) and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon. Drain excess fat if necessary.
    • Add the onion, bell pepper, and mushrooms (if using). Cook for 5–7 minutes until softened.
    • Stir in the garlic, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, salt, pepper, and paprika. Cook for another 1-2 minutes, then remove from heat.
  3. Make the cheesy sauce:
    • In a separate bowl, combine the cream cheese, sour cream, mozzarella cheese, provolone cheese, and cheddar cheese. Stir until the mixture is smooth and well-combined.
  4. Assemble the casserole:
    • Spread the beef and vegetable mixture evenly in the prepared baking dish.
    • Pour the cheesy sauce mixture over the beef and vegetables. Spread evenly to cover.
  5. Bake the casserole:
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and slightly golden on top.
  6. Optional topping:
    • If you like a crunchy topping, sprinkle the crispy French fried onions over the casserole in the last 5 minutes of baking.
    • Bake for an additional 5 minutes to allow the onions to crisp up.
  7. Serve:
    • Once baked, let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving. You can enjoy it on its own, or serve it with a side of fries or a salad!

Tips & Variations:

  • For a lighter version: Swap sour cream for Greek yogurt and use reduced-fat cream cheese.
  • Use shredded steak or Philly cheesesteak meat: For a more authentic Philly flavor, you can use thinly sliced ribeye or sirloin steak in place of ground beef.
  • Spice it up: Add hot sauce or jalapeños if you prefer a bit of heat.
  • Add more veggies: Feel free to toss in extra veggies like spinach, zucchini, or even diced tomatoes for added flavor and nutrition.

This Philly Cheesesteak Casserole delivers all the cheesy, savory goodness of a classic Philly cheesesteak in a warm, satisfying casserole form. Perfect for a quick weeknight meal that’ll please the whole family!
