World War II rationing dessert recipe

Posted on March 18, 2026 by Admin

During World War II, ingredients like sugar, butter, and eggs were limited, so people created “rationing desserts” that used what was available. One classic example is the eggless, milkless chocolate cake—simple, sweet, and still satisfying.

🍫 WWII Rationing Chocolate Cake

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vinegar or lemon juice
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 175°C (350°F) and grease a baking pan.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add wet ingredients: vinegar, oil, water, and vanilla. Stir until smooth.
  4. Pour batter into pan.
  5. Bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Cool before serving. Optional: dust with cocoa or powdered sugar.

📝 Notes

  • No eggs or milk required—perfect for ration times.
  • Can substitute some sugar with honey or syrup if needed.
  • Wartime desserts were often simple but resourceful, making do with limited ingredients.

I can also provide a WWII-inspired cookie or pudding recipe that uses minimal sugar and fat, similar to what people made during rationing. Do you want me to share that?
