Meat pie

Posted on October 24, 2025 by Admin
A meat pie is a savory dish made with pastry crust and a filling that typically includes minced or diced meat, gravy, vegetables, and seasonings. It’s a classic comfort food found in many cuisines around the world — from British pub pies to Australian hand pies, Nigerian meat pies, and Jamaican patties.

Here’s a simple recipe for a traditional meat pie (British-style):

🥧 Classic Meat Pie Recipe

Ingredients
For the pastry:

  • 2 ½ cups (315 g) all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup (225 g) cold butter, cubed

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 6–8 tbsp cold water

For the filling:

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef or minced meat

  • 1 onion, finely chopped

  • 1 carrot, diced (optional)

  • 1 cup beef stock

  • 1 tbsp flour

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • 1 egg, beaten (for glazing)

Instructions

  1. Make the pastry:

    • Combine flour and salt in a bowl.

    • Rub in the butter until the mix looks like breadcrumbs.

    • Gradually add cold water, mixing until a dough forms.

    • Wrap in plastic and chill for 30 minutes.

  2. Prepare the filling:

    • In a skillet, cook the minced meat until browned.

    • Add onion and carrot; cook until softened.

    • Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute.

    • Add stock and Worcestershire sauce; simmer until thickened.

    • Season with salt and pepper. Cool slightly.

  3. Assemble the pie:

    • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).

    • Roll out half the pastry and line a pie dish.

    • Spoon in the cooled meat filling.

    • Roll out the remaining pastry and cover the pie.

    • Seal the edges, trim excess, and cut small vents on top.

    • Brush with beaten egg.

  4. Bake:

    • Bake for 35–40 minutes, until golden brown.
