Cleaning dirty bed pillows

Posted on March 3, 2026 by Admin

Cleaning dirty bed pillows can make a huge difference in freshness, allergies, and sleep quality 🛏️✨

Here’s how to clean them properly based on pillow type:

🧼 First: Check the Care Label

Always look for washing instructions before starting.

🛏️ How to Wash Most Machine-Washable Pillows

(Polyester fiberfill or down/feather)

🌀 Washing Machine Method

1️⃣ Wash two pillows at a time to balance the machine.
2️⃣ Use warm water and a gentle cycle.
3️⃣ Add a small amount of mild detergent (too much leaves residue).
4️⃣ Optional: Add ½ cup baking soda to deodorize.

🔄 Extra Rinse

Run an extra rinse cycle to remove all soap.

🔥 Drying

  • Tumble dry on low heat.
  • Add 2–3 clean tennis balls or dryer balls to fluff and prevent clumping.
  • Make sure pillows are completely dry (this may take a while).

🚫 Memory Foam or Latex Pillows

Do NOT machine wash.

Spot Clean Method

1️⃣ Mix warm water + small amount of mild detergent.
2️⃣ Gently blot stained areas (don’t soak).
3️⃣ Rinse by blotting with clean damp cloth.
4️⃣ Air dry completely (no dryer).

🌞 Deodorizing Trick

  • Sprinkle baking soda over pillow.
  • Let sit 1–2 hours.
  • Vacuum off.
  • Air in sunlight if possible (UV helps kill odor-causing bacteria).

🧴 Removing Yellow Stains (Deep Clean)

For white pillows:

  • 1 cup hydrogen peroxide
  • ½ cup baking soda
  • 1 tbsp dish soap

Wash as usual (only for white, washable pillows).

🧽 How Often?

  • Wash pillows every 3–6 months.
  • Replace pillows every 1–2 years (or when they no longer spring back).

If you tell me what type of pillow you have (down, memory foam, cooling gel, etc.), I can give you exact step-by-step instructions just for that one.
