🍫 Grandma’s Chocolate Pie (Old-Fashioned & Creamy)
This classic stovetop chocolate pie has a silky custard filling and flaky crust — just like grandma used to make.
🛒 Ingredients
For the filling:
- 1 pre-baked 9-inch pie crust
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 3 egg yolks (save whites if making meringue)
- 2 1/2 cups whole milk
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Optional Meringue Topping:
- 3 egg whites
- 1/4 tsp cream of tartar
- 1/3 cup sugar
(Or use whipped cream instead.)
👩🍳 Instructions
1️⃣ Make the Chocolate Filling
- In a saucepan (heat OFF), whisk sugar, cocoa, cornstarch, and salt.
- Whisk in milk and egg yolks until smooth.
- Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly.
- Once thick and bubbly, cook 1–2 more minutes.
- Remove from heat; stir in butter and vanilla.
Pour into baked pie crust and smooth the top.
2️⃣ Add Topping
🥄 For Meringue:
- Beat egg whites with cream of tartar until soft peaks form.
- Gradually add sugar; beat to stiff peaks.
- Spread over hot filling, sealing edges to crust.
- Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 10–15 minutes until golden.
🥄 For Whipped Cream:
- Cool pie completely (about 3–4 hours).
- Top with freshly whipped cream before serving.
💡 Grandma’s Tips
- Stir constantly to prevent scorching.
- Pour filling into crust while hot to prevent weeping (if using meringue).
- Chill at least 4 hours for clean slices.
