Ground Beef Shepherd’s Pie

A classic comfort food that’s hearty, cheesy, and perfect for weeknight dinners. Using ground beef makes it quick, while the mashed potato topping keeps it cozy and satisfying.


🛒 Ingredients

For the filling:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup frozen mixed vegetables (peas, carrots, corn)
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt & pepper to taste

For the topping:

  • 4 cups mashed potatoes (homemade or instant)
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)

🥣 Instructions

  1. Cook the beef:
    In a large skillet, brown ground beef with onion and garlic. Drain excess fat.
  2. Add vegetables & seasonings:
    Stir in tomato paste, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Simmer 5–10 minutes until slightly thickened. Stir in frozen vegetables.
  3. Assemble:
    Preheat oven to 375°F.
    Spread beef mixture evenly in a baking dish. Top with mashed potatoes, spreading smoothly. Sprinkle shredded cheddar on top if desired.
  4. Bake:
    20–25 minutes, until potatoes are slightly golden and filling is bubbly.
  5. Serve:
    Let rest 5 minutes before serving.

🧑‍🍳 Tips for the Best Shepherd’s Pie

  • For extra flavor, sauté onions and garlic in butter before adding beef.
  • Mash potatoes with a little cream or milk for extra creaminess.
  • Make ahead: Assemble the pie and refrigerate overnight, then bake the next day.
