🛒 Ingredients (2 × 9-inch / 23 cm layers)
Dry
- 1¾ cups (220g) all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup (75g) unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 cups (400g) sugar
- 1½ tsp baking powder
- 1½ tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
Wet
- 2 large eggs (room temp)
- 1 cup (240ml) milk (or buttermilk for extra moistness)
- ½ cup (120ml) vegetable oil
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup (240ml) hot coffee (or hot water)
🔥 Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line pans.
- Whisk dry ingredients together.
- Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla. Beat until smooth.
- Slowly mix in hot coffee (batter will be thin — that’s normal).
- Pour into pans.
- Bake 30–35 minutes, until a toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs.
- Cool 10 minutes in pans, then transfer to a rack.
🍫 Simple Chocolate Buttercream
- 1 cup (225g) butter, softened
- 3½ cups powdered sugar
- ½ cup cocoa powder
- ¼ cup milk
- 2 tsp vanilla
Beat until fluffy and spreadable.
