Ham and potato soup

Here’s a comforting and hearty Ham and Potato Soup recipe you can make easily at home.


🥣 Ham and Potato Soup

🛒 Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2–3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4 cups peeled and diced potatoes (russet or Yukon Gold)
  • 3 cups diced cooked ham
  • 4 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1 cup milk or heavy cream
  • 1–2 tsp dried thyme
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • Optional toppings: shredded cheddar, green onions, crispy bacon

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1️⃣ Sauté Base

  1. Melt butter in a large pot over medium heat.
  2. Sauté onion until translucent, 3–4 minutes.
  3. Add garlic and cook 30 seconds more.

2️⃣ Cook Potatoes & Ham

  1. Add diced potatoes, ham, broth, and thyme.
  2. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to a simmer.
  3. Cook 15–20 minutes, until potatoes are tender.

3️⃣ Blend (Optional)

  • For a creamier texture, mash some of the potatoes with a potato masher or use an immersion blender to partially puree.

4️⃣ Add Cream

  1. Stir in milk or cream.
  2. Heat gently (do not boil) for 5 minutes.
  3. Season with salt and pepper.

5️⃣ Serve

  • Ladle into bowls and top with cheese, green onions, or bacon if desired.

🔥 Tips

  • For extra flavor, sauté a bit of celery and carrot with the onions.
  • Leftover ham from a holiday dinner works perfectly.
  • Can be made in a slow cooker: cook potatoes, ham, onion, garlic, and broth on Low 6–7 hours or High 3–4 hours, then stir in milk at the end.
