Old fashioned apple crisp

Posted on November 2, 2025 by Admin
Ah, an old-fashioned apple crisp—warm, comforting, and perfect with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Here’s a classic recipe that gets that tender, cinnamon-spiced apple filling and crunchy oat topping just right.

Ingredients (serves 6–8)

For the filling:

  • 6–7 medium apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix)

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar

  • 1 tsp cinnamon

  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg (optional)

  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour (helps thicken juices)

  • 1 tsp lemon juice

For the topping:

  • 3/4 cup old-fashioned rolled oats

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar (light or dark)

  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon

  • 1/4 tsp salt

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small cubes

Instructions

1. Preheat oven

  • Preheat to 350°F (175°C).

  • Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish (or similar) lightly with butter.

2. Prepare the apples

  • Peel, core, and slice apples into 1/4–1/2 inch thick slices.

  • Toss in a large bowl with sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, flour, and lemon juice.

  • Spread evenly in the prepared baking dish.

3. Make the topping

  • In a separate bowl, mix oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt.

  • Add cold butter cubes and use a pastry cutter, fork, or fingers to mix until it resembles coarse crumbs.

4. Assemble and bake

  • Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apple mixture.

  • Bake 40–50 minutes, until apples are bubbly and topping is golden brown.

5. Serve

  • Let cool 5–10 minutes (so the filling thickens slightly).

  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

💡 Tips for perfection:

  • Use a mix of tart and sweet apples for depth of flavor.

  • Don’t slice apples too thin—they hold up better during baking.

  • For extra crunch, add 1/4 cup chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans) to the topping.

If you want, I can also give you a quick one-bowl, no-peel version that’s even faster but still tastes like a cozy, old-fashioned dessert. Do you want that?
