Ohhh yes 🫕✨ cheese fondue — cozy, melty, dip-everything comfort food.

Here’s a classic Swiss-style cheese fondue that’s smooth and foolproof.


🫕 Classic Cheese Fondue

Ingredients (serves 4)

  • 1 cup dry white wine (like Sauvignon Blanc)
  • 1 clove garlic, halved
  • 8 oz Gruyère cheese, shredded
  • 8 oz Emmental or Swiss cheese, shredded
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice (optional, helps smoothness)
  • 1–2 tbsp kirsch (optional, traditional)
  • Pinch of nutmeg
  • Black pepper

Instructions

  1. Prep the pot
    Rub the inside of a saucepan or fondue pot with the cut garlic.
  2. Heat wine
    Pour in wine (and lemon juice if using).
    Heat gently until steaming but not boiling.
  3. Coat the cheese
    Toss shredded cheese with cornstarch (prevents clumping).
  4. Melt slowly
    Add cheese handful by handful, stirring constantly in a figure-8 motion until smooth.
  5. Finish
    Stir in kirsch (if using), nutmeg, and pepper.
    Keep warm over low heat.

  • Shred your own cheese — pre-shredded can turn grainy.
  • Keep heat low to avoid separation.
  • If it gets too thick, add a splash of warm wine.
  • If it breaks, whisk in a tiny bit of lemon juice or cornstarch slurry.
