Here’s a classic homemade apple pie that never lets you down, plus a couple of smart tips so it comes out chef’s kiss.
Classic Apple Pie
Ingredients
- 2 pie crusts (homemade or store-bought)
- 6–7 apples (Granny Smith + Honeycrisp is elite)
- ¾ cup sugar (mix white + brown if you like depth)
- 2 tbsp flour or cornstarch
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- ¼ tsp nutmeg (optional but nice)
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tsp vanilla
- Pinch of salt
- 1 tbsp butter (dotting the filling)
- 1 egg (for egg wash, optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425°F / 220°C.
- Peel, core, and slice apples.
- Toss apples with sugar, flour, spices, lemon juice, vanilla, and salt.
- Line pie dish with bottom crust, fill with apples, dot with butter.
- Cover with top crust (lattice if you’re feeling fancy). Cut vents.
- Brush with egg wash; sprinkle a little sugar.
- Bake 20 minutes, then lower to 375°F / 190°C and bake another 35–45 minutes until bubbly and golden.
- Cool at least 1–2 hours before slicing (hardest step).
Pro tips
- Mix apple types → better flavor + texture
- Thin slices = even cooking
- If edges brown too fast, cover with foil
- Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or sharp cheddar (controversial but correct)
