Scallion

Posted on January 13, 2026 by Admin

A scallion—also called a green onion—is a mild, fresh-tasting member of the onion family used both raw and cooked.

🌱 What Is a Scallion?

  • Long green stalks with a small white bulb
  • Much milder than regular onions
  • The entire plant is edible (white + green parts)

🧅 Scallion vs Green Onion vs Spring Onion

  • Scallion / Green onion: Same thing in most places
  • Spring onion: Slightly more mature, with a larger bulb and stronger flavor

🍽️ How Scallions Are Used

  • Raw: Salads, garnishes, dips, tacos, ramen
  • Cooked: Stir-fries, fried rice, eggs, pancakes
  • Grilled or charred: Sweet and smoky
  • Sauces: Scallion oil, ginger-scallion sauce

🌿 Flavor Profile

  • Fresh, crisp, lightly oniony
  • Green tops are milder; white bottoms have more bite

🥗 Storage Tips

  • Store in the fridge wrapped in a damp paper towel
  • Or stand upright in a jar with a little water (like flowers)
  • They also regrow easily—just put the roots in water 🌱

Quick Uses

  • Sprinkle on soups or baked potatoes
  • Mix into cream cheese or butter
  • Add to omelets or scrambled eggs
  • Toss into rice or noodle dishes
