Classic southern recipe

Posted on December 28, 2025 by Admin

Here’s a classic Southern-style spaghetti with meat sauce—the kind that shows up at family dinners and church gatherings. It’s a little heartier, slightly sweet, and full of flavor.

Classic Southern Spaghetti

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • Salt & black pepper
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1 small green bell pepper, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes or tomato sauce
  • 1 (14–15 oz) can diced tomatoes (optional but very Southern)
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp sugar (important for Southern-style balance)
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • 12 oz spaghetti
  • Grated Parmesan or cheddar cheese (Southern homes often use either)

Instructions

  1. Cook spaghetti in well-salted water until just tender. Drain and set aside.
  2. Brown the beef
    • In a large pot or skillet, brown ground beef over medium heat.
    • Season with salt and pepper.
    • Drain excess grease if needed.
  3. Add vegetables
    • Stir in onion and bell pepper.
    • Cook 4–5 minutes until softened.
    • Add garlic and cook 30 seconds.
  4. Make the sauce
    • Add crushed tomatoes, diced tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar, Italian seasoning, paprika, and garlic powder.
    • Stir well.
  5. Simmer
    • Reduce heat to low and simmer 30–45 minutes, stirring occasionally.
    • Taste and adjust salt, pepper, or sugar.
  6. Serve
    • Serve sauce over spaghetti.
    • Top with cheese and hot sauce if desired.

Very Southern Touches (Optional)

  • Serve with buttered white bread or garlic toast
  • Add a splash of Worcestershire sauce to the meat
  • Pair with fried chicken, green beans, or a side salad
  • Leftovers taste even better the next day

If you want, I can share a Southern baked spaghetti version or one like grandma used to make with no measurements.
